ControlAP Overview
Network Configuration
Typical
Network Layouts
On
the left is a solution that uses routers, which is common
since many modems and APs now come with routers. Note that with APs
that include a router (usually one WAN port and 4 LAN ports) the WAN
port is not used.
On the right is a solution that does not use external routers
at all.
The PC is directly connected to the Internet via the modem. Also the AP
only has one ethernet port.
In both cases, DHCP is disabled in the AP since ControlAP will handle DHCP.
For network layout, AP edition users (ControlAP running inside APs or embedded devices) should refer to this layout.
Platform specific Notes:
Windows
users require the Routing and Remote Access Service to run before
starting ControlAP (ControlPanel->AdminTools->Services)
Mac
OSX users require the firewall to be enabled, and if using the built in
wireless card as the AP, turn sharing on and
set SSID.
ControlAP Configuration
After running ControlAP, You will see the ControlAP main
console
on the desktop
(but not with AP edition, see web administrator below instead).

From
the Settings drop down menu, you can open the Configuration Settings
Dialog (shown below), the Web Administrator, the Counter Manager or
exit ControlAP (exiting on some platforms using the close button will
just minimize ControlAP).
The View drop down menu will give the
choice to view current users or the main event window (default), in
addition to allowing you to clear the events.
Help will give you the option to check the version of ControlAP as well as bringing you to the online documentation.

The
Settings Dialog (selected from Settings->Configuration above) will
allow you to select both required adapters (not required for demo mode).
The
AP and Internet Adapters can be selected from the drop down menus in
the middle of the dialog window, you can also enter IP addresses
manually or with the detect button, force ControlAP to detect
the
adapters again. ControlAP uses the list as listed from the command line
using the ifconfig command (ipconfig for Windows). If for some reason
ControlAP cannot recognize your adapters (make sure they are connected)
you can enter both the IP addresses and adapter names from the Web
Administrator (see below). Options: Auto Start will start
ControlAP when ControlAP is launched (same as start button), demo
will set allow you to run ControlAP without adapters to locally test
features with local browser that has the web proxy set to localhost
port 80, beep will do that when a client connects to ControlAP. All
additional configuration options is available with the Web
Administrator.
Web Administrator
Desktop edition users should initially configure network settings from the Settings
dialog as shown previously. Alternatively, both Desktop and
AP edition users can use the Web
Administrator.
Note: web administrator username is admin and password is admin - please change after first access.
