The ControlAP Free edition: (no nag ware, no spyware, no 3rd party software)
A free functional 30 day evaluation version of the ControlAP Standard edition.
Some features are limited, initially e.g. supporting only up to 8 simultaneous users for first 30 days, 3 afterwards. For a complete list, see the readme file accompanying the download.
The ControlAP Standard edition:
Featuring web based pay at the counter billing option, optional integration with an external authentication http server, support for 200+ simultaneous users and more. Also available as an embedded device platform version. Available for Purchase $129
The ControlAP Plus edition:
Adds SSL (https) authentication via a patent pending secure SSL redirection protocol to an external authentication server. Also available as an embedded device platform version. Features credit card billing available out of the box using Mediatracker's Hotspot Billing Service. Also adds optional Radius client support. Available for Purchase $179
The ControlAP Professional edition:
Centralized authentication and billing server for supporting and managing multiple hotspot locations. Provides backend billing integration (including PayPal support) with built-in database (or integrate with 3rd party databases), authentication (using the patent pending SSL authentication redirection from multiple ControlAP Plus hotspots), and full customization of billing plans. Become your own WISP. Requires an internet merchant account (or PayPal business account) and optionally a SSL certificate / domain name.

ControlAP Pro now enables you to print calling cards for VOIP phone calls using the free Asterisk PBX software.

ControlAP Embedded vs ControlAP on a PC

In addition to running ControlAP on a dedicated PC with Mac OSX, Windows or Linux, the ControlAP Free, Standard and Plus editions are also available to run embedded inside an AP or device, e.g. Linksys WRT54G, Soekris boards.

The embedded version allows running ControlAP in locations where having a dedicated PC is inconvenient (e.g. outdoors). However running ControlAP in a PC will have more processing power and memory and allow driving several APs connected via a hub or switch connected to the PC.

ControlAP Plus vs ControlAP Pro

Which hotspot credit card billing solution should you choose? ControlAP Plus or ControlAP Pro?

ControlAP Plus is a hotspot gateway, ControlAP Pro is the backend authentication and billing solution that also functions as a local hotspot gateway in addition to handling remote hotspots each running ControlAP Plus.

ControlAP Pro allows you to handle the billing yourself where you always keep %100 of the revenue by providing you with your own backend (web/app server + database) that integrates with your Internet merchant account. Out of the box, the merchant accounts supported are PayPal Premiere or Business, Verisign's Payflow Link and Authorize.net with the option to configure it for additional merchants. Note that the credit card processing itself is handled at the merchant account's site (most merchant sites allow for customization of the web pages so that it looks seamless) With ControlAP Pro, you have complete control of the customization of the login web pages as well as the price plans. You can also manage several remote hotspot locations each using ControlAP Plus which connect to your central server running ControlAP Pro.

With ControlAP Plus, Mediatracker can handle billing for you by default. After purchasing ControlAP Plus, you register your hotspot with Mediatracker to provide proper usage tracking web page customization. Or you can change the default authentication server to use your server running ControlAP Pro.

Additionally as a third option, you can create or integrate an existing centralized backend for use with ControlAP Plus to provide your own custom backend billing solution. The protocol and API specification as well as example code (JSP, ASP, PHP) is available for interfacing with ControlAP Plus, or use the radius protocol support.
